The business case for using EHRs as a prevention tool
Posted on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 - 12:50 amWhen it comes to advancing health IT,
PCIP's goal is to improve population health through the use of health IT and health information exchange. Funded by Pzifer, PCIP has helped more than 2,200 primary care providers in
The practices' EHRs track and document outreach activities, and the EHRs are even set up to alert PCPs when barriers to their patients' preventive care and health goals arise.
One of the many historical problems with EHRs and EMRs is the lack of business case. Absent a total overhaul of the payment system, currently if providers are taking better care of their patients, use of their services goes down, along with revenue. A clarification is necessary in this article. The PCIP program is not funded by Pfizer. Pfizer is only funding the unique Panel Management Initiative within the larger PCIP program. PCIP is funded by a NYC Mayoral Grant, as well as numerous federal and state grants. Only limited private healthcare support has funded this project though much more is needed. The goals of prevention of disease are key to making PCIP and EHR adoption successful. Let's hope some payer reform comes about to continue to make prevention more lucrative than treatment!
Thank you for the clarification!
